Hip-Hop 'Reggaeton' Film to be Produced by Jennifer Lopez

Sony BMG - January 21, 2006 - All rights to 'Reggaeton,' an original screenplay written by Albert Leon have been acquired by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Sony BMG plans to produce the project, in conjunction with Jennifer Lopez's Nuyorican Productions, through the recently launched SONY BMG Film.

'Reggaeton,' SONY BMG Film's first feature, will be produced by Jennifer Lopez and Simon Fields for Nuyorican Productions and by Sofia Sondervan on behalf of SONY BMG Film.

The picture will be shot on location in New York and Puerto Rico with production expected to commence in Spring 2006.

'Reggaeton' is the story of Rob, a talented 21-year-old from the South Bronx whose dreams of hip-hop stardom are dashed when a run-in with local thugs makes him flee the city to hide in Puerto Rico with the father he never knew. There he finds love with a street-savvy local girl, CC, and discovers a new genre of music, a mix of hip-hop and reggae. The locals call it Reggaeton. Rob partners with his half brother, a DJ, and together they make groundbreaking strides and are poised to become Reggaeton stars. But, when a corrupt music producer "discovers" Rob and offers him a record deal that brings him and CC back to New York, a new conflict threatens his romance and his budding career.

'Reggaeton' is one of the most original scripts we've come across since we launched this division," said Sofia Sondervan. "We expect it will attract a top-notch director and cast."

Janet Sales, Nuyorican's head of development, brought "Reggaeton" to SONY BMG Film. The deal was negotiated by Andrew Ross on behalf of SONY BMG, Bob Wallerstein for Nuyorican Productions and Matt Leipzig and Jordan Bayer at Original Artists for Albert Leon.

SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT has a stable of Reggaeton artists including Voltio, Calle 13, Alexis y Fido, Zion y Lennox, John Eric and M.R.P. as well as a label deal with the highly influential Puerto Rican imprint, White Lion.

You don't know what 'reggaeton' is?
No need to be embarrassed about that.
It is still a relatively new music genre which had its world-wide breakthrough in 2005 which saw reggaeton quickly gaining popularity at Salsa dance clubs all over the Western world. It is a mix of Spanish rap, Latino samples and reggae dancehall with a modern digital sound. US rap artists such as Wyclef Jean and 50 Cent brought it into the mainstream as part of their constant search for a fresh sound, and the reggaeton song 'Gasolina' became a massive club tune throughout most of Europe.

Blacklisted in Puerto Rico
The story of reggaeton goes back to Panama where Panamanians of Jamaican descent started a movement of playing "Spanish reggae" in 1977. But during Manuel Noriega's regime the music was having "some trouble with the government" - as the Panama music producer Ramon Bustamante puts it. In short, they were ordered not to play Spanish reggae anymore. Artists such as El General and Nando Boom left the country and migrated to New York City. There, they became quite successful, introducing 'La Piena' music to mainstream, and it quickly spread throughout Latin America.

The Puerto Ricans fell in love with the music style and started to do their own versions. In the beginning of the 1990s, as it was gaining popularity there, again it was blacklisted by the authorities.
"If the police saw you with a reggaeton CD they would take it away. It wasn't allowed in stores either," 27-year-old Puerto Rican singer Master Joe recalled in an interview with Eddie 'Nino Brown' Rosas which is written by Quinée 'Princesa' Butler on Reggaetonline.net.

Banned in Dominican Republic
When Master Joe began his career at the age of 14 in 1993, it was as a way to express himself when no one else in society would listen.

"The demand for Reggaeton in Puerto Rico was enough to turn this new genre into a self-propelled vehicle of expression for the underclass youth of Puerto Rico. Poverty and harsh living conditions were everyday life for reggaeton artists, and it showed through the lyrics of their songs. Young artists found reggaeton was a means to share their experiences in life, raw and uncensored, which has made reggaeton's lyrics hard for much of the upper class of Latin America to digest. Those who could not relate to the lyrics of the music saw reggaeton as vulgar, and claimed that the music was a negative representation of life in Latin America.

Reggaeton's reputation has suffered severely in several Latin American countries due to the derogatory nature of its lyrics. Reggaeton artists were not allowed to perform concerts in a few Caribbean countries. It was banned on radio, and albums were boycotted in countries like Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The governments of these countries often criticize reggaeton because they feel its lyrics are too violent, vulgar, sexual and derogatory towards women."

The reggaeton singers felt they were misunderstood, in particular on the issue of women: "We will never put any woman down, they are the base of reggaeton," says Master Joe.
However, reggaeton was banned in Puerto Rico until in the end of the 1990s where new reggaeton artists came along who began to "clean up" the lyrics to ensure that their music would be played on the radio. Eventually, the ban was lifted and became available to the public through regular music stores.

Chingo Bling is working along side Tony Touch on a new project they call Cuerveton. Cuerveton is something like American Idol for the genre Reggaeton and Latin Hip Hop. Through this event they are searching for the 2006 new generation artists. The Cuervoton tour will be in New York, Chicago, Houston and Phoenix. The event offers artists 21 years old and older an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience and show them what they're made of. Many artists are taking part in this event.

Chingo is excited to be a part of this event. He stated in a recent interview with Reggaetonline.net, “I have the pleasure of working on this with my great business associate and friend, Tony Touch. I grew up in the hood and it was difficult for me as well as any vato from the hood to get support. I want to be able to help another artist as I was helped and Cuervoton can do this for an urban artist."

Ching Bling has a busy year ahead . He believes in putting all of his energy into any project thrown his way. "This year of 2006 has gotten off to a great start. First with Cuervoton, my bobble head business has taken off and now many artists and not just in the Hispanic community are thinking of marketing themselves with their bobble-heads. When asked about how important family is, Chingo bling had this to say;
" I remember when I was younger and I use to go to the studio all day with my homies and do my thing," laughing out loud," My poor parents were losing their minds thinking, I was never going to get a ‘real' job. Like my father who works hard everyday. But now they know that my hard work paid off and they support me de puro Corazon (pure heart). I will never forget how happy they were when I got the ‘Key' to the city during this big festival in our hometown."

However all work and no play, makes Chingo Bling a sad boy. Ladies around the world must be pondering the thought of his ideal girl. Is there a special girl in his life? Chingo gave a devilish smirk and continued, "Not at the present moment. But I am taking in ‘Applications'. I want a regular girl, she does not have to be famous. She has to have a good head on her shoulders and have goals and also a job. Nothing fancy but I need to see that she can handle her own, ya feel me. Most important she has to have some real ‘Sexy' feet. I love sandals and heels on a sexy mami."

Already hard at work on his new album and two tracks will be with Tony Touch. When asked about his ideal female artist Chingo shared that it's Selena. According to Chingo "My old time favorite, Selena, God rest her soul. I would love to talk to her family and ask permission to maybe use some old tracks of her vocals and make a sweet song. That would be like a dream come true for me. She has been gone for a long time and there is still no talent like her out there."
